I have found the standard 2.5mm "stereo" plug/jack to be unreliable
in some cases.
  So the D9 connector which is used for PC serial interface might be
a better solution, you can even screw together the D-connectors
which makes it more reliable as well as the possibility to use
more than one pin for each wire.
  The downside is that you need to cut the remote switch cable and
add an extra couple of connectors to be able to connect the extension
cable.
