Actually, there is an advantage to backward
compatibility to old manual focus lenses even on an AF
body.  For starters, you save money by not having
purchase new lenses!  Many, many subjects don't
require  auto-focus.  And many times, manual focus is
preferred when the photographer needs to selectively
focus on something that is not on a focusing point.

I simply point out that Canon, having left its FD
owners high and dry, should not be talking about the
advantages of being compatible.  Both systems have
their good points and both have dissapointed their owners.
