You may be bale to find this information by looking at the patents but it is
generally very difficult to trace the exact patent as there are so many.
Unless you have a clue that you can follow.

I have hunted down a couple of patents that belong to Nikon which may be of
interest:

The first US patent number is 6097896. You can look at this patent at
http://www.delphion.com/patquery by entering the patent number. This patent
describes the VR unit within the lens.

The second US patent no is US 6141156. This one describes the 80-400mm
optic.

I have not yet found the patent that describes the "software" because I have
no clue to follow on that other than the claim by Moose Peterson that the AF
sensor has something to do with it.
