The advantage the 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM has over the 100-300 f/5.6L is
the USM.  Mine focusses very fast when I use it at CART races.

I have never used the L version but Pierre is not the first, nor only,
to say that the L is better optically.  But then it is an L lens.
