If you're going to be shooting racing cars, I'd be
inclined to recommend the USM lens (4.5-5.6). AF on
the older design 'L' lens is very slow. But I suppose
if you're just panning with the cars, rather than
shooting them head on, that might not matter.
The 'L' lens is certainly sharper, but the USM lens
focuses faster and more quietly, and is of more robust
construction, I think.
