Hi!

Looks like Canon ruined EOS 500, as it doesn't have 3 focus points. :(
I can't compare my EOS 500 to 3000, but can tell you that EOS 300 with new 
28-90 DC focused quite a bit faster when I played with it at photo show. 
(comparing to EOS 500 + 35-80 III).
