Hi Robert,
My Elan 7E performs to specification. Did you make sure
you pushed the + button hard enough?
I also found it easier to watch the top LCD panel instead of
the viewfinder to figure out what the Elan 7E was doing :-)
CF11 and CF12 can be very confusing. The Elan 7E behaves
differently when:
1) metering is activated,
2) AF selection mode is activated, and
3) Eye control focus is available/activated
I find that CF11=2 is very cumbersome. Life becomes a lot
easier if you can use the arrow keys (or Eye control if you
have it). I prefer CF11=1,CF12=0 when not using eye control.
What combinations of CF11 and 12 do other people use?

Push and release the + button to enter AF selection mode (6s)
the LCD shows which AF point(s) are selected.
Use the four arrow keys select either one AF point only
or auto AF select (all 7 points)
To exit AF selection mode, push the + button again, or
half press the shutter button to begin metering.
Set CF11=1, CF12=0 -----------------------------------------
+ thumb button sets auto AF select (all 7 points).
Half press the shutter button to activate metering (6s)
During metering, a "needle" is displayed on the exposure scale,
and you can see yellow numbers in the viewfinder LCD.
During metering, you can use the four arrow keys to select
one AF point only.
To reset to auto AF select (all 7 points), push the + thumb
button. If metering stops, you cannot change AF points with
the arrow keys.
Set CF11=2, CF12=0 -----------------------------------------
Push and release the + button to enter AF selection mode (6s)
the LCD shows which AF point(s) are activated.
QCD selects up/down AF point(s)
Main dial selects left/right AF points(s)
Arrow keys have no function.
To exit AF selection mode, push the + button again, or

This also activates the centre AF point.
