The implication is that our conversations somehow influence their design and
manufacturing decisions. Likely not to any significant degree.

You're in the minority, I'll bet. Canon sells a lot more Rebels than 1v's,
and most consumers want more automation and smaller, lighter, cheaper
products. Not just lenses, look at cars, TV sets, stereos or any other
things that have shrunk in size and weight because of new manufacturing
techniques and materials. You and I want metal mounts, distance scales, more
exacting build quality, and Canon does recognize that and is happily to
oblige, for a price. But it would be silly to think all those Rebel users
want that or are willing to pay for it. (Not that there is anything wrong
with a Rebel, BTW)
