H Gary,

In a word - no. A-ttl only works in Program Mode
anyway (and Dep mode maybe). With a 540EZ it only
works if you're not bouncing the flash (direct flash).
With a 430/420EZ it also woks in bounce mode in
program, but has VERY distracting white preflash every
time you touch the shutter button).

In Av, Tv and M it (the 540/430 etc) reverts to plain
TTL, just like an EX speedlite. A-ttl (IMO and that
of many others) is nothing to write home about. It
tends to underexpose backgrounds (sometimes in fairly
bight ambient light), but if you use them in the
"creative" modes the 540 and 550 are the same.

The 550EX is a very capable flash on ANY EOS, you'd be
spending money on a 540EZ, to get basically the same
results on an A2. I've used a 550EX on an EOS 5 (A2e)
with great results. I'd say, stick with what you have.

Regards
Gary
