You are correct.
You can also swivel the 550EX such that the sensor panel on the front is
turned towards the ST-E2 to received the signal.
What is likely to happen is that in an indoor environment you will less
likely have problems as the IR bounce around the walls back to the flash, I
have done this numerous times without problem, it's also nice when I have
the 550EX on an umbrella and there is no sync cord to trip myself over (I
don't need anymore help to damage my equipment).
But in an outdoor environment, say you are using the 550EX as a fill light,
you are much better off with the off camera sync cord as the ambient light
may overpower the IR that the reflected IR is not as easily picked up by the
IR detectors in the flash.
That's why I have both set up.
