I can't seem to use the DOF preview - it just is not very telling. Am I the
only one?
Also, especially on ELan Ii, unless I have eye control focus, I think it is
not available.

Primarily cost, and secondly fewer people use the scales these days.
I for one rarely use them. I typically use DOF preview.
