Hi Ken, While I was at the race track working last week, I noticed a
professional photographer I know well who works for a large publishing firm
shooting with a much shorter than usual lens. I went over and said g'day and
he explained that, as he hadn't been able to line up a rental 500/4 or 600/4
in time, he had resorted to a 300/4 + 1.4x to get by for the day. I can't
remember now if it was the IS but it was tracking the bikes fine and
generally doing a good job for him. As the images won't be published for a
few weeks yet I can't supply you with the resultant images. It seemed like a
good thing though and was a lot more compact than the 300/2.8IS. I imagine
that it would be fine with the 2x provided you didn't want to use AF to any
great degree.
