I can't really argue with your points of view, since we are getting into the
subjective realm of 'what is sharp'. I have always examined my slides with
an 8x or 10x loupe before I send it anywhere as do the photo editors for
magazines and photo libraries.

Like you, I'm also quite meticulous with assessing the sharpness of my
slides, but I guess we must ask ourselves the question: "when is sharp,
sharp enough?" What about all the other aspects of a lens characterestics
that make up an excellent photo: contrast, colour, bokeh and general
performance? Do you really think you would see the difference between an
enlargement of a real life photograph of, say 40x50cm between the IS and
non-IS version if both photos were taken under same conditions? Well I can
tell you, in some circumstances there simply would not be an enlargement for
the non-IS version because the photo simply could not be taken.:-)
I rather hope that their would be a DO 300/2.8 IS in the not too distant
future. We could all sell the f4 (IS or not IS) in exchange for the best of
all worlds, except maybe price :-)

Yes, it is excellent value, but IMO pretty useless in certain aspects of
wildlife photography.
