No need for an expensive repair. It should be a "do it yourself job".
It's not a configuration problem, though. The problem is a stuck switch
in the hotshoe.
Take a close look at the hotshoe from the back. In the rails where the
flash slides in, you should see a spring on each side. Under these
springs you'll see two round switches. One or both of them are stuck in
the down position. This makes the camera think there's still a flash
mounted in the hotshoe. You will have to carefully free these switches
with an appropriate tool and eveything will be back to normal. Maybe
cleaning off whatever made them stick and careful ly applying some
lubrication will prevent this from happening again soon.
