This was the deciding factor for me in buying the 420EX. I was
initially looking at the 550EX, but despite the extra power (and
significant extra dollars), I didn't want to be impeded when it
came to AF. Flash photography is a pain when the frame is matrix
metered for the center focusing point, especially when contrast
in the scene is signficantly varied (and when one NEEDS AF assist
in poorly lit situations). Also, from experience, the 380EX was
insufficient on only a few occassions, and not even the 550 would
have saved me in those. So the 420EX was a decent power upgrade
and a major AF upgrade.

It seems to be that you are saying that the 420EX is actually more advanced in some
ways (with the Elan 7) than the 550EX. Is that correct? From reading the Elan 7
manual, it seems that some features are available with the 550EX that are not
available with the 420EX, like Flash Exposure Bracketing.
Also, what is the "flickering AF assist beam"? I thought that the Elan 7 uses the
EX-series infrared focus assist, if attached. Otherwise, it uses the built-in flash
unit for AF. Please correct me.
