Hi Tom,

Only in the sense that the 420EX illuminates all 7 focusing
points. So in this regard it was made to work very well with the
Rebel 2000 and Elan 7. The 550EX doesn't do a poor job here
either--it does at least five. But still, I'd rather have all
seven lit with decent flash power and money still left in my
pocket rather than nominally stronger power, fewer AF points, and
a sizable hole in my pocket. :) The 550EX is, of course, more
than just power, but I can live without the on-board manual
overrides. It's not worth the cost for me yet.

I can't comment on FEB, as I haven't received the camera yet. Can
someone else shed some light on this?

Um, that was Julian's post. You're right though, and Julian was
arguing the same point. The flicker AF assist--as opposed to the
IR assist beam--works with all 7 points because it throws light
over the entire field of view.
