You're misunderstanding me. I didn't say that the AF assist has
anything to do directly with exposure. The focus points and
matrix metering are linked, so that if one must use only the
center point to focus (as the AF assist on a 380EX will only
illuminate the center point), and then recompose, there is a risk
for bad exposure, since the overall scene will be weighted to the
point used for focus, and this point will not necessarily be on
the subject and potentially be on something that CAN affect
exposure.

But you've just said that ilumination of the AF sensors has
nothing to do with exposure.
