I forgot to mention something: if I understand correctly, matrix
metering is linked to the focus point, so there's greater
potential for disaster if the flash will not illuminate all
points. The only time you need AF assist is when the subject(s)
is dimly lit, and it is in these situations where flash
illumination can vary drastically. And with ETTL and P mode, the
camera and flash are going to decide what is a well exposed shot.
With the 550EX and five points lit, the problem is not so bad,
because the spread lessens the amount of recomposition necessary;
but with a 380EX and a Rebel 2000, some shots were just dog ugly
because I needed to use the center point for focus. After
recomposing (while the camera is still metering for the center
point) the center point would more often than not land on
something that would throw off exposure in a major way (i.e., on
a lady in a white dress in the foreground).
        I guess I could have used FE lock in those situations, but it's
much easier to have all AF points working with me.
