I had a look at both addresses, but all I see are some graphics, can't
read the text :-( Can you read it and if yes, is it a real explanation
of evaluative metering?

I think it is more than that. Else it would not make much sense, IMHO.
At least not for older bodies with one single AF sensor ;-) I'm pretty
sure there is at least something like ignoring outer zones that are
too far off the "main" zones meter value (around the active sensor).
Also there seems to be kind of a reality check, which assumes that
ambient light cannot be much brighter than bright sunlight.
My guess (once more) is, it *is* a type of center-weighted metering
which has additional rules like ignoring seemingly "odd" zones and
limiting the possible range of meter values.

The graphics I saw at the site could be interpreted as a
classification of metering zones like:

1) Highest weigh (Sensor zone + immediate neighbors)
2) Medium weight (Close to the sensor zone)
3) Least weight (Rest)

Those sets of zones could also have different sets of rules.
It's all idle speculation though ;-)
