Hi Jim,

You probably need a hyperfocal calculator.  You could plug
the numbers for the 28-135 into my JavaScript calculator:

  or the one on Photozone:

The relevant hyperfocal distances (IN FRONT of the lens):
28mm f/16 1.9m = 6'5"
24mm f/16 1.4m = 4'9"
Remember DOF is from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity.

So, focussing to 1.9m/6'5" with your lens at 28mm and f/16 will
theoretically give a DOF from 1m/3'3" in front of the lens to
infinity.

And if you focus the EF 24mm to 1.4m/4'9", f/16 will give DOF
from 0.7m in front of the lens to infinity.
