these are my personal choices:
Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye
Sigma 17mm-35mm f2.8-4
Canon 50mm f1.8
Canon 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS
Canon 100-400 f4-5.6 IS
Of these, the only one I currently own is the 28-135 (I'm selling my old
train collection to buy the others) but is seems to me that these give a
pretty good range of focal lengths, with reasonable overlaps. I know
these would blow your $1000-1500 budget wide open, but replace the
100-400 with the 100-300 and that comes pretty close to $1500.
