Hello Peter,

As I was saying to John in another message I now have some lenses on trial
so I'll be able to check them out before buying. I'm really happy with the
results of the 50 1:1.4 so far though - it does look good wide open. Thanks
for the input.

Cheers,

Ian

last week I have been using Leica M's and large format cameras but I have

Also it seems that my eyes are failing me, as there seem to be more out of
focus shots these days.

To make a long story short - last week I bought a new EOS 1V and a
50mm
1:1.4 lens to give things a try. I am pleased with the results from this
lens and the operation and functions of the camera as well and am now ready
to try some longer focal length lenses. In the past I have only used prime
lenses and was wondering how the quality of Canon zoom lenses compare to
their primes? In particular I am looking at the 70-200 2.8 L just now.
Thanks in advance.

Ian,

The 70-200 F2.8L is a superb optic as is the 28-70mm F2.8L lens.
Having also been a user of rangefinders I understand what you are asking.
The 70-200mm lens is as close as you can get to a fixed focal length lenses
in a one zoom package. The middle apertures in particular are where they
compare. Wide open of course, the high end L primes from Canon will do
slightly
better, but not by very much. Incidentally, the Canon 50mm F1.4 is very
very
good wide open and across the whole range from F1.4 - F22 very close to
identical
in resolution to the 50mm F1.4 Summilux-M. The 70-200mm F2.8 is better
optically
than the Leica Elmarit-M F2.8 at 135mm stop for stop. Hope this helps.
