Hello Dan and all,
A few days this week were spent trying out a 70-200/2.8L with a
variety of films - b&w, colour negative & transparency. I liked the results
from this lens so much that I went out and bought a new on Friday.
Admittedly there were no shots of test targets and the like but there were a
wide variety of shots at as many apertures and focal lengths that I could
manage. The build quality of this lens also seems to be very good as well -
solid, no plastic feel to it at all. All round I'm very pleased so far with
it and the 1:1.4.
The EOS 1V is also a treat to use now that I have most of it figured
out - it's the first time that I've carried a camera manual around with me!
For me the R8 wasn't even in the picture as I wanted auto focus and didn't
like the way the R8 fit or didn't fit in my hand. The 1V is a dream to use
and it's like discovering photography all over again. Most of my work here
in Bangkok is street stuff and I can now get in three bracketed, in focus
and correctly exposed shots in much faster than it took for me to get out my
Sekonic for a light reading before. The camera seems to be infinitely
adjustable to your own style of shooting - great fun. I also picked up the
software so that I can download the shooting data to my computer - note
taking is now down to a bare minimum.
I've only been using this setup for a week now and time will tell
how it all works out but I'm very optimistic indeed.
Cheers,
Ian

Subject: RE: EOS zoom lenses
Hi Ian,
Please keep us posted as to your impressions of these L zooms. I am
also a Leica M user considering getting into the EOS system (still on
the fence between it and Leica R), so I'd be most interested to hear
how the Canon glass works for you.
I also find it very hard to believe that the 70-200/2.8L at 135 could
match the latest 135 apo M lens stop for stop (though it may be the
equal of the later 135 elmarit). Still, the convenience of having
the zoom would make up for some loss in corner resolution and
contrast.
I'd also be interested in hearing how the L glass handles the out of
focus areas (bokeh).
Thanks,
Dan
