Pattie,
I have been a sports photojournalist for several years now. I have tried several
of the aftermarket TC's. I now own a Canon 1.4X and a Canon 2X. I gave up on the
other TC's. I had several problems with either the quality of the image using
the aftermarket TC, or I had problems with the electronics via the lens.
(aperture and or autofocus info not passed through TC).
By far the TC most used by myself is a 1.4X. I trade the 1 stop light loss for
the extra magnification on some photographs on nearly every assignment.
I Shoot using 2 - EOS 3 bodies. One with a 400mm f2.8 Canon lens on a monopod,
and the other with a 70-200mm f2.8 Canon lens (handheld). You can check out my
sports photography at Wardphotography.com
I have an assistant who shoots another Major Brand of Camera. I don't want to
grace this newsgroup with the brand name, but on his F-4, he is currently going
through the same things I did years ago. He becomes frustrated when the AF is
lost through his aftermarket TC. He constantly complains about photograph
quality, and has only recently admitted that the TC is the problem.
I don't want to come off as a Canon only advocate, but the combination of the
fast shutter speeds necessary for sports photography combined with the need for
superfast AF, has made my choice clear. (A choice that was arrived at by test
and tune of several TC's over the years).
I hope this was helpful. Good luck and great shooting.
Patrick
