I'm not a sports photographer but do have 2 off brand TCs.
The comment above applies to the TCs that were available at the time, since
then
Kenko, Tamron and Sigma have released Pro300, SP and EX TCs respectively
which are optically better than what was available before and also communicate
correctly with the electronics. The Sigma also has a protruding front element
which limits which lenses it is compatible with (different protrusion so
different
list to the Canon).
