I just came back from living for two years in Japan where I acquired the
Canon spending bug. I found that most accessories are not that much
cheaper. Lens hoods, grips, etc... in general seem about the same price
as B&H. Also, certain lenses in Japan were really much more expensive,
for some reason, like the 20mm USM which was a bargain at in Japan at
45,000 yen. I found most of my savings buying used equipment, which
tends to be of really high quality in Japan. Much better than the
equipment found on ebay. Those Japanese amateurs really take care of
their equipment and seem to upgrade a lot.

My best advice would be to make a list of what you want to buy, right
down the prices you could buy them for in the US and shop carefully in
Japan. I found that bodies tended to be cheap in Japan (I paid approx.
$250 for my rebel g + lens kit) and certain lenses (I bought the 12mm
extension tube+28-135 IS + hood for a total of approx. $388). Also I
found the quality of used lenses to be very good and those stores to be
well stocked. But shop carefully for used stuff, there is really no such
thing as returning an item in Japan.

Bring your passport so they don't charge you tax and get a point card
which can be redeemed for further purchases. Also see http://www.viboon.net/photo/

Check under the buying in Japan links and buying a used EF lens link.
