Okay, the quotation was:

>>the metering method set on the camera without the extreme emphais
>>on the AF point.

Hear, hear....

Okay, half of what I said. So, obviously I'm not fully wrong....

Aha. It's not using the evil spot metering thing with AF
switched off. Another part of what I said.....

Obviously there is one error in my information:
The selector for metering modes is pretty useless
once you use flash. E-TTL will do anything but use
what you selected and with AF off it will do just
average metering.

Nice job, Canon, you really f***ed up this one....

I had previous experience with Canons foul metering
once you use flash. I had a beautiful backlit scene
with a girl sitting in front of a white curtain
with flash to fill for the shadows on her face.

Out of experience I knew that my camera reading
could not be right, spotmetering off her face
with my EOS-1 gave me far too much light.

So I checked my handheld Gossen against that and received
what I expected. Hadn't I paid attention the whole job
would have been down the drain. I was fully convinced
that my camera meter was on the Fritz.

Later I learned that for some really stupid reason
Canon had designed to switch ambient metering to
average when you switch on a flash unit. What for?
And why without warning?
