You don't, unless you can bend the laws of physics.
Actually, maybe you can. If you can choose a wide
enough aperture to properly expose the background,
then the flash will properly expose the subject.
That's what P mode flash attempts to do.
In other words, say you want to shoot at f5.6 for
adequate DOF. And say the background needs an
exposure of 1/8 second at that aperture to be properly
exposed. If you set the shutter speed to 1/125
second, the background is going to be exceedingly
underexposed (dark) whether you shoot with flash or
not.
If you open up the lens to f1.4, you've gained 4
stops. Coindently, that corresponds to a gain in
shutter speed from 1/8 to 1/16 to 1/30 to 1/60 to
1/125! Both the background and subject can now be
exposed correctly. (Of course, if you're shooting
with a 75-300 zoom, this isn't going to help much).
