regarding the 300 IS hand held
I use mine mostly hand held with either the 1.4 or 2 X converters. I
find I can get sharp hand held images down to about 1/15 second at 300mm
and more towards 1/45 second at 600, generally lack of sharpness at these
low speeds has more to do with movement of the animal (or bird) than me
shaking.
The removable tripod shoe is a nice improvement over my previous non-IS
version of this lens as it makes it easier to hand hold.
As to tripod, have you considered a mono-pod, they help a lot, taking the
weight of the lens/body and making it easier to remained trained on a
animal for a longer period and weight about 1 to 1.5 lbs. Alternatively,
I like my Gitzo Carbon with a Acra Swiss B1 head, the combined weight is
just over 4 lbs. and supports my 600F4 without problem.
