Hi Chris, You are right with this. Since buying this lens last year I have
only occassionally used IS in mode 1. I use a tripod for important statics.
Where it comes into its own is in mode 2 for panning predicable movements at
slower shutter speeds. It is very effective for this purpose. For more
erratic movement I generally turn off IS and increase shutter speeds.

nb: your 1n must be hungrier than the 1v. I shoot a lot with IS on and lots
of active tracking before and after shots. I'm getting at least 30 rolls
from a set of standard alkalines, which isn't too bad at 50c Aust. per AA.
