I am new to this list and to photography in general, though I have definitely
been bit by the bug. I have an Elan 7 and a few Canon lenses at this point.
I have a question about the 28-105 f3.5-4.5. I asked this on one of the
newsgroups and got variable responses.

I noticed that when I have this lens mounted on the body I can feel what one
would describe as a very slight 'give', 'shimmy', 'click', or sensation of
the lens not being tight to the body when I gently shaked or moved the camera
back and forth. At first I thought it was the way the lens mounted to the
body but on further examination this proved not to be the case. The mount to
the body is quite firm. The slight click or give was coming from the other
end of the lens, the part that extends. To prove this, I found that when I
extend the lens and hold one hand on the barrel and the other on the end of
the extended lens and gently rock in opposite directions that the sensation
that I describe was reproduced. However, I should say that the lens seems to
function normally, though I haven't really gone beyond 4x6 prints at this
point. I am not able to elicit the same sensation from my 100-300 f5.6L EF
lens, though I realize that this is an older lens with a different type of
construction.

So my question is…is this a normal finding in this particular lens? I do
notice that there seem to be two parts that extend outward from the barrel
and wonder if the lens is just constructed normally with a bit of side to
side give?

Sorry if this has been dealt with a before. Thanks.

Howard
