I would neither need nor want AF with that. Those lenses are good enough for excellent
manual focussing.

Major misunderstanding here. Better men than I may well be able to get eagles, herons,
etc in flight without resorting to AF but I can not. Fast AF is an essential
ingredient for me. Even for stationary birds, I find I can not focus quickly enough to
keep up with
swaying on grass stalks and turning of the head, etc. DOF is often pretty limited at
the image scale I like to get and stopping down for more is often ruled out by subject
movement. . I have tried bird photography with and without AF. AF is better . . . no
doubt
about it. Not perfect, but usually better. My hats are off to those who have actually
accomplished beautiful image of birds just being their usual fidgety selves let alone
impressive images of them actually in flight. That is CAN be done I do not dispute . .
. that
AF makes it a lot easier is pretty clear to me
The past two days, I have gone through 14 rolls of film, mainly on osprey in flight,
and have revisited my decision on the D30. There is no doubt any longer that it is not
the tool for me. It lacks the capacity the shoot frames rapidly in succession. It
would indeed
be marvelous to run back to the laptop in the van and download a few images to see how
things are going. Maybe in another few years, a digital body with high performance AF
and rapid shooting capability will be available for 3K or so, but I think I made the
right
decision to wait.
