I agree that it is often better, sometimes the difference between a useable photo and 
no photo at all (same for ice hockey :-)  ). At the same time, I recently won a 
contest with a photo ( of a bird) that was focused manually (EOS 3, EF 300/2.8L, EF 
1.4x extender,
tripod, ISO 100 film). MF has its place, but personally speaking I could never say I 
would neither need nor want AF for bird/wildlife or sports photography (I would have 
kept my FD gear if that were the case). Of course, you need to choose a single 
focusing sensor for
best results. . . .
