If you look in the archives of this list you'll find lots of (often heated-)
discussions on this topic.
Canon does have a new dial which is, according to them, a lot stronger with
metal pins. I've felt the new dial and believe me, it feels TOTALLY
different from the old one. It still has the centre lock pin, but it turns
with almost no effort at all. For a while the local Canon technicians did a
modification for a small charge (less than $20 equivalent) but now they are
replacing the top cover, which is much more expensive (~$100). They still
get new EOS5's here, but all with the new dial.
