VERY common. My old A2 is in the body and fender shop (a.k.a. Canon's
Irvine service center) right now for exactly this repair.

Who did your repair?
The Canon service center in Irvine does the mode dial repair for $116
without replacing the top deck. As an added bonus, the've devised a repair
in which they replace the plastic detent cam (the breakage-prone part) with
a metal equivalent that their head tech came up with - I know a few people
who've had it done, and they've all stayed fixed.
