Hi Dan and Jim,
The Elan 7E pop-up flash is a TTL unit. To get E-TTL, you need
to use an EX SpeedLite, like the 420EX or 550EX. The 550EX also
has a Custom function to enable TTL only function. Or a TTL-HSA.
Jim, ETTL is a system, not _just_ the pre-flash. The features
that are not available on a TTL system include:
1) Compatibility with digital EOS and DV (D30, ?D1v, G1, etc.)
2) FP flash
3) Modelling pre-flash
4) Pre-flash exposure warning/confirmation
5) FEL
6) 4 channel-3 group wireless slave remote control
7) Slave intensity-ratio control
8) Direct-lighting pre-flash TTL metering
9) Bounce-lighting pre-flash TTL metering
All this with backward TTL compatibility on Type B bodies.
Cheers
Julian Loke
