 100~300/5.6 + 1.4 = 140~420 f/8.
 The f/8 could be an issue.

Is that because the Elan 7 won't autofocus, because the image would be dim to manual 
focus on or both.  The more I read, it seems like there are no really good solutions 
for my price range.  Some of the more objective reviews of the Sigma 170-500 were not 
so great so I am hesitent to get it.  KEH has some 400 5.6L for about $850 (which is 
pushing it a bit) but then I would run into the same f stop problem if I added a 
teleconverter and I am worried that even were I to stick at 400 I might be a bit 
disaapointed trying to get bird shots that fill the frame or even frame filling animal 
shots at the zoo.

Sounds like no great solutions here.
