Hi Howard!

Third party converters don't report correct f stop to the camera so it will 
try to focus anyway. I tried 2x converter with 80-200 f4.5-5.6 on EOS 500 
and it did AF and lock on eaven at ~f11.
If you have a chance try it out, should help you decide.
