Well, the ST-E2 is certainly less expensive than a 550EX, and if you have two
flash units and you want them both off the camera, then the ST-E2 is more
economical than a third 550EX. What I had in mind was a situation where you had
one 550EX positioned such that the Off Camera Shoe Cord was too short (I sure
wish it wasn't coiled!); once you add up the cost of all the connecting cords,
shoes, and hubs, the cost of a wired solution is nearly that of an ST-E2. But,
if you buy the ST-E2 you still only have one flash; if you buy a second 550EX,
you can use it like an ST-E2, or as a second light source on or near the camera.
In other words, for less than the cost of an ST-E2 + 420EX, you can get another
550EX, which gives you both the wireless contol and a light source. Of course,
as I mentioned above, if you want both light sources positioned some distance
from the camera, the ST-E2 is probably the more economical choice.
