Hi Ken,

It would seem that there's no way to have the 420EX fire at a different intensity
than the 550EX used to trigger itthe Elan 7 booklet is uninformative in this
regard. I have to say I was pretty surprised the first time I saw a 420EXit seems
really underfeatured for the price. I suppose if I ever want to venture into
multi-flash territory, another 550 is the only real choice. Fortunately the price
has dropped quite a bit since I bought mine. :-)

I don't know how useful it is really; I just tried it for the first time yesterday,
and it didn't seem to make much difference with the camera set to Av mode. What I
really want is to be able to get the flash off the camera without having to use the
too-short Off Camera Shoe Cord (or whatever they call it). The ST-E2 transmitter is
nearly $200, but after you buy all the things you need to use one of the longer
connecting cords you're practically at the same cost. For another $170 I could have
another 550 and be able to do both remote firing and multiflashprobably the most
cost-effective (if not frugal) option.
