There are at least three different Quantum packs that will work with
the 420EX - using one of two different adapters that features a unit
that plugs into the flash's battery compartment. I understand this
results in a somewhat untidy situation where you are working with the
flash compartment door ajar to allow the lead passage.
In any case, you can check out the necessary matches at:
http://www.qtm.com/
In the index, under "Power Packs/Flash Power" you can find
compatability charts for various flash units.
BTW, On my 420 I only experience that kind of delay after shooting for
a while. At first it recycles quite rapidly - I can often get off
groups of 5-6 shots without the ready light going off. Nonetheless,
when it starts, it is a pain, and I am considering an external pack,
too. However I'm thinking of waiting for the 550EX I'm planning to
buy, as it has a battery pack jack.
