Hi Jonah,

Apart from the obvious (e.g. use faster film, shoot from a
closer distance, use a wider aperture, avoid FP flash), you
could consider the following:

1. What kind of battery do you use in the flash?
NiMH and NiCd cells have low internal resistance, and recycle
the flash *much* faster than alkaline or lithium or carbon-zinc
cells (shudder :-)

I get 2 seconds for "green light" recycling on the 430EZ and 550EX,
and 5 to 8 seconds for "red light" cycling.


2. What is the film advance mode on your camera?
It is best to use single-frame advance. If you do, you can shoot
as soon as the flash is partially recharged "green light". Canon
calls this "quick flash". Otherwise you have to wait for almost
full charge "red light" to be achieved.

On the other hand, if you need absolutely full charge, you
should wait several seconds after the "red light". See:
