The other lens to consider is the 200/2.8L.  I found one of these used, for C$700,
and never used my 75-300 zoom again.  It may not have the long end, but it has
that"L" quality.  Mine came from someone who had traded it in on a 70-200/2.8L, and
I've heard of other people who have done this.
