It is one of the best zoom lenses ever made.
I have seen no reliable report of an IS version, just
lots of hoping on this list :-) If there is one, it will
be more expensive than the current lens. So you have 3
choices:
1) buy now
2) buy later when IS comes out hoping to save some
3) buy IS later when it comes out

Yes, unless you want to put a TC on it.
Better if the weight/size/price of the 2.8 are a problem.
