Well, Pierre Bellavance mentioned he might want to shoot something like
flowers
up close in focus, with background going off in the distance. He was
concerned
about the closer focusing on the EF 24mm lens than the EF 20-35.
Well, ever since then, I've been intrigued about this type of situation,
and wondering how my 20-35 would do under such conditions. So, on my last
roll of film, I shot some flowers at minimum focus distance, using F22, and
with different types of background going off in the distance.
First of all, there is no way to keep everything in focus from minimum
to infinity, even at F22. Infinity is fairly sharp on a small print, just
not really in focus.
The other thing I found interesting, and the reason I wanted to try this
was: what kind of photo would warrant this treatment, and what could be done
with it? I found it difficult to frame an interesting shot this way, perhaps
one day though a great scene will unfold for me using this method. I did
however, get some interesting shots, that at least demonstrate the abilities
of the EF 20-35 at 20mm, minimum focus. I've got a feeling the difference
between the EF 20 and the 20-35 at 20mm would be very slight indeed. If you
could get close enough to really emphasize one flower, it might make a
difference.
However, with minimum focus being closer, likely the perceived focus in the
background
would be less.
I'd be interested just how well in focus infinity is on the EF 20 at
minimum focus distance, using F22, Pierre.
And lastly, here's a link to my test photos. Please comment on
suggestions for future shots using this method, and how you thought the EF
20-35 did.
