Funny you should say Julian. No filter, used a tripod as
a big-footed monopod :-), and had lens hood (had my back to low
sun, which I'm sure also helped). I'm impressed with the
results (as in, they're an improvement on my standard fair).

It's amazing what happens when you start listening to *and*
put into practice what experienced people say on this list
and elsewhere. I live and learn (*and* finally put into practice).

To bring this back somewhat on-topic, my favourite lens is
my 50/1.8 Mk II. From a beginners point of view, it's
good optical quality and "zoom-with-your-feet" requirement
take away any excuse for being unimpressed with results
(as in, "well, this 28-80 3.5-5.6 is suppose to be a bit
of a dog"). Now, it all comes back to me and composition,
subject, etc.) I got better results then I'd ever got from my
28-80. I wouldn't put it *all* (though "most" would be
fair) down to optical quality and speed, but also making me
*work* (ie. think) for the result. I'd *highly* recommend it
for a beginner like myself. My results aren't 'good', but they're
an improvement (when I felt I was plateauing) which counts for me.

Which leads to your later comment:

You know, the 100-300 is fine, but that 200 2.8 as my first L
*is* tempting, which leads to a converter... :->

Cheers
Marc
(seriously, until *I* improve beyond it, I'm happy with the 100-300,
but gear-envy is somewhat fun :-) )
