the longer focal length will take more time to focus -- if you have an idea
of what you want you are way ahead to limit the range.

Does anyone know why Canon put the distance switch on this lens?  Mine
has a switch that you can set for 1.5m-infinity or 3m-infinity.  If it
is set on 3m-infinity you have to manually focus anything closer than
3m.  Why not just leave the switch on the 1.5m-infinity position all the
time?  I am sure Canon had a good reason for this switch but I sure can
not figure out why.
