  As I posted to the EOS forum, these lines are from Canon's brochures:

  "Elan II/IIe AF working range: EV 0~18"

  "Elan 7/7e AF working range: EV 1~18 (at ISO 100 with the standard chart)"

  Additionally the 7/7e/30/33 lack the near-infrared patterned AF 
assist light that the II/IIe/50/50e have. Of course, if you're using 
a dedicated flash you'll probably have the AF assist light there.
