I decided to test my (new) used Canon 300 mm f4 L and teleconverters today
and I think I have a problem with camera stability that I could really use
some help with. I used the lens with an Elan 7 and a Canon 1.4x
Teleconverter. Mounted them by using a quick release plate on the tripod
collar (I am really new at this and presume it is correct that when using a
tripod collar the camera itself goes unsupported) to a Bogen 3021 series
tripod with a nice, heavy Bogen 3038 Ball head. The legs on the tripod were
on a wooden deck in the backyard and the tripod's center post was down. I
was tripping the shutter with a remote release and trying to take photos of
birds at a feeder. I didn't use MLU since I was dealing with moving subjects.
Nonetheless, when looking through the viewfinder and tripping the shutter, I
could clearly and easily see that the camera was vibrating. I tightened all
the connections and there was still obvious vibration through the viewfinder.
I did notice that though the 1.4x felt tight mounted to the camera, when I
put the heavy lens onto it and mounted the tripod collar to tripod that if I
turned the camera in the collar it felt as if there was a bit of shimmy or
play to the camera/teleconverter connection...but the same seemed true with
the 2x converter, so I don't think that is the problem.
I haven't gotten the slides back yet but I am sure that, even if the 1/125
second shutter speed minimized the shake, that there was still unwanted
vibration.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
As a second question....do others have the same bit of shimmy or play to the
teleconverter/camera connection when their 1.4x or 2x teleconverters are used
with 300mm or longer lenses. I assume this is normal since it is with both
converters and I have not noticed it with lighter lenses.
