It depends. As Peter already mentioned, the sharpness difference is there
but not dramatic. There are other factors, though. One of them is distortion,
which is corrected much better in the L lens, although it's not free of
distorton as well. But you can use it occasionally for buildings and other
subjects with straight lines. I wouldn't recommend to do this with the 28-135
if you can't stand its quite heavy distortion. Also, of course, it is f/2.8.
And yes, the 28-70L is a quite heavy and bulky beast as well, especially if
you use the hood.
